Bullhead Mountain
Sep 24
Trip Leaders:  Jesse Pope and Stewart Skeate
Trip Report: Joe Potts of Blue Ridge Nature Conservancy

HCAS joined with the Blue Ridge Nature Conservancy for a Bullhead Mountain hike and hawk watch. It was a great day of hiking and natural interpretation of the area.  Those who attended enjoyed some great companionship and education from our hike leaders Jesse Pope and Stewart Skeate.  Also, Bob Black of Alleghany County; Rob McCorkindale of BRC; and Bob Oelburg, assisted with interpretation along the hike.  Gratefully, there was a great turnout, the weather was generally cooperative, and no 1st aid supplies were needed.  Thanks again to all the great hikers who joined to make it a great day.  Thanks also to Jan Pender and CTNC, Jim Keighton, Stewart Skeate, Jesse Pope, and Tom Guy (our host at Bullhead Mountain).

Field trip to Trout Lake
May 5, 2011
Trip Report:  Anita Clemmer

Trout Lake this morning was a might cool...especially in the shady sections, which was most of the trail but three brave birders made it without too much discomfort and saw lots of good birds and heard even more!

Black Throated Blue Warblers, Hooded Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, American Crow, White-breasted Nuthatch, American Goldfinch, Veery, Canada Warblers (many!), Blue Jay, American Robin, Blue Jay, Gray Catbird, Song Sparrow, Scarlet Tanager (pair), Red-eyed Vireo, Pileated Woodpecker, Mallards, Rough-winged Swallows (flying over the lake with the other swallows), Barn Swallows, Tree Swallows, Tufted Titmouse, Black and White Warbler, Carolina Chickadee, Northern Parula

It was a good exercise in working with bird calls since more were heard than saw at first, but then they began cooperating and solved a few mysteries about alternate calls.
